49ers and Rams prepare for regular season game in Melbourne

Summary

The 49ers and Rams are scheduled to play a regular-season NFL game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia. The event is expected to draw nearly 100,000 spectators and features extensive surrounding entertainment, including a performance by the Jonas Brothers. While the NFL is staging nine regular-season games across seven countries this season, questions remain regarding the sport's long-term international footprint. Unlike basketball or baseball, which maintain deep-rooted programs globally, American football currently relies heavily on a tournament-style event model. The league aims to foster wider participation through flag football initiatives in more than 500 Australian schools. This effort is designed to build an organic culture around the sport ahead of its inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
