49ers place Sam Okuayinonu on injured reserve following foot surgery

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Sam Okuayinonu will miss a significant portion of the 2026 season due to a broken foot. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the injury, which occurred during a practice session last week when the player was stepped on. Okuayinonu underwent surgery and has been placed on injured reserve, leaving the team without one of its top rotational defensive linemen for its upcoming Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia. The 49ers already have Mykel Williams on the Physically Unable to Perform list. To bolster the position, the team added defensive end Khalid Kareem to the practice squad over the weekend. Kareem could see playing time immediately as the team adjusts its defensive front ahead of the season opener.
