49ers rank among top teams to not win Super Bowl in 20 years

The San Francisco 49ers, under head coach Kyle Shanahan, have appeared in two Super Bowls in five years but have not secured a championship. Pro Football Focus ranks the 2023 49ers third and the 2019 team tenth among the best NFL teams over the past 20 years that failed to win a Super Bowl. The 2023 squad achieved the highest overall PFF grade of 95.3 and third in both offensive and defensive ratings. Their overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58 left them without a Lombardi Trophy, a recurring disappointment for Shanahan, who has lost both his Super Bowl appearances against the Chiefs.
