AFL releases five short films for Melbourne International Film Festival

The AFL, VicScreen, and the Melbourne International Film Festival have released five short films documenting various aspects of Australian football culture. The project, known as Footy Shorts, focuses on the intersection of the sport and community life, featuring themes ranging from multicultural integration to fan traditions. Each selected film team received a $25,000 production budget and professional mentorship to produce the works, which were screened at a gala premiere during the 74th Melbourne International Film Festival in August. The films include stories about the Rumbalara Football and Netball Club, the North Melbourne Football Club cheer squad, and the experiences of diverse groups navigating the sport. All five shorts are now available for public viewing online through the AFL platform.
