AI-generated images mislead about Iranian footballers during World Cup

Summary

Iranian footballers have faced misinformation during their World Cup campaign, with AI-generated images circulating online purportedly showing them praying on the pitch. These images, shared amidst the backdrop of conflict in the Middle East, have been identified as synthetic content with visual inconsistencies. An AFP photographer confirmed that no such scene took place during Iran's matches, which include a 2-2 draw against New Zealand on June 15 and a 0-0 draw with Belgium on June 20. The situation highlights the dangers of false content online, especially in sensitive contexts like international sports.
