AJ Johnson competes for a roster spot at New Orleans Pelicans training camp

The New Orleans Pelicans begin training camp in several weeks with guard AJ Johnson vying for a spot on the final roster. Acquired in a trade involving Jordan Hawkins, Johnson enters camp as a project player looking to secure his place after previous stints with the Washington Wizards and Dallas Mavericks. He averaged 3.3 points last season but demonstrated potential in the G League, where he posted 14.7 points and 3.6 assists over 27 games. Standing 6-foot-5, Johnson must improve his shooting consistency to distinguish himself from competitors including Kobe Bufkin, Caleb Houstan, and Trendon Watford. He faces a deadline for his fourth-year contract option, making his performance during camp a critical factor in his status with the organization for the coming season.
