University of Akron supporter Marty Whims II participated in the team’s home opener against Robert Morris on Saturday by helping call plays during the opening offensive series. The promotion, titled Offensive Coordinator of the Game, allowed Whims to work alongside head coach Joe Moorhead to script the team's first drive. While the Zips moved the ball effectively into opponent territory, the possession ended when wide receiver Marcel Williams lost a fumble near the 37-yard line. Whims, a longtime season-ticket holder and Akron graduate, prepared for the opportunity by reviewing film and consulting with former Alabama coach Nick Saban. The event contributed to a rise in ticket sales for the program, which reported sold-out stadium suites. Akron eventually won the game 45-10.
