Despite his absence from training camp and the preseason, former Vikings linebacker Ben Leber and local media members suggest it is likely Smith will rejoin the team. Leber proposed that a return near Week 2 or later could be logistically advantageous for both the organization and the player. Smith finished last season with 42 solo tackles and maintained a 68.9 defensive grade over 793 snaps. The team has operated without him throughout the preseason following an injury to Jamal Adams.
