Antrim GAA footballer Kavan Keenan receives suspended sentence for hit-and-run

Antrim GAA footballer Kavan Keenan was handed a nine-month suspended prison sentence at Antrim Crown Court on Friday for a 2024 hit-and-run incident. Keenan, 27, struck Fiona McGill with his van while she was walking in Martinstown, causing serious injuries that required extensive hospital treatment. Although he initially denied being the driver and failed to remain at the scene, Keenan eventually pleaded guilty to charges including careless driving and failing to report an accident. Judge Peter Irvine noted the severe physical and psychological impact on the victim while citing Keenan's previous good character and community standing as factors in the decision to suspend the sentence. The court heard that Keenan had faced initial challenges from the victim's family at the scene and police later located the damaged vehicle at his residence. Keenan's father had also initially claimed to be the driver of the van at the time of the collision.
