Arizona Diamondbacks designate Lourdes Gurriel Jr for assignment

The Arizona Diamondbacks designated outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment on Sunday, Sept. 13. The 32-year-old veteran finished the season with a career-low.210 batting average across 51 games, hampered by multiple injuries including right ACL surgery and strains to his left hamstring and right adductor. The decision comes as the team competes for an NL wild-card berth, trailing the San Diego Padres by 1.5 games. The organization opted to remove Gurriel from the active roster rather than retain him for the remainder of the season or trigger his contract option for 2027. To fill the vacancy, the team added rookie designated hitter José Fernández to the roster. The Diamondbacks are scheduled to host the Texas Rangers later on Sunday as they continue their push for the postseason.
