Arizona State police investigate collapse of St. Louis Blues prospect Matthew Mayich

Arizona State University police are investigating the collapse of St. Louis Blues prospect Matthew Mayich during a preseason workout on August 20. The 21-year-old defenseman, a transfer student from Clarkson University, was participating in a session led by a non-university employee at the Tempe campus track. Temperatures reportedly reached at least 87 degrees during the hour-long, military-style drill that included sprints and push-ups. Rob Carey, a lawyer for the Mayich family, characterized the incident as exertional heat stroke and disputed the university's account of the event. Mayich is currently hospitalized at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. Arizona State is conducting a separate internal review of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
