Teenager continues development with brace at Ipswich Merino: ‘He is a big talent and we have to take care of him’ Mikel Merino says Max Dowman reminds him of Lamine Yamal after the Arsenal prodigy continued his development by scoring twice in his side’s 4-2 win over Ipswich. Dowman, who has been given a host of opportunities at senior level by Mikel Arteta, starred after being handed his first appearance of the season at Portman Road on Tuesday. Arsenal teenager Max Dowman, who has been an unused substitute on four occasions for the Gunners this season, will get his chance in the team, but it must be earned, says boss Mikel Arteta. The 16-year-old attacker made 13 appearances in all competitions last season and scored against Everton to become the youngest scorer in Premier League history. Arteta did not name Dowman on the bench in Saturday's 2-0 win over Sunderland and could not guarantee he would start at Portman Road in the EFL Cup against Ipswich on Tuesday.

Before the game Mikel Arteta said Max Dowman "will have his minutes and he will have to earn them like anybody else". Last season the teenager played 13 times - and became the youngest Premier League scorer ever against Everton - but had just been an unused substitute this season so far. Dowman also let the ball run to Mikel Merino for his strike to make it 4-0.
