The Houston Astros have granted Joe Espada permission to interview for the vacant manager role with the Seattle Mariners. Despite still being under contract with the Astros until the end of October, Espada's situation appears to indicate the team may not retain him after a disappointing 2026 season. The Mariners parted ways with manager Dan Wilson after a 76-86 finish, seeking new leadership for the upcoming season. Espada, who has led the Astros to two division titles but struggled in postseason play, fits the Mariners' criteria for experience in a major-league manager. The Mariners are now evaluating candidates to fill the managerial vacancy.
