ASU hockey opens season with tribute to Matthew Mayich after tragedy

Arizona State hockey began its season on October 2, 2026, defeating Lindenwood 5-0 in St. Louis. The Sun Devils played without their head coach and in the wake of a team tragedy involving defenseman Matthew Mayich, who remains on life support following a workout incident. Players honored Mayich’s memory with yellow ribbon decals on their helmets, while his jersey was displayed in the locker room. ASU has announced an independent review of the circumstances surrounding the incident, amidst calls from the Mayich family and team members for accountability. The investigation follows growing concerns over the nature of the team's practices.
