Athlete dies during swimming leg of IRONMAN 70.3 in Madison

An athlete died following a medical emergency during the swimming portion of the IRONMAN 70.3 Wisconsin event in Madison on September 12. The participant was pulled from the 1.2-mile course in Lake Monona after the Madison Fire Department received a call for emergency services. Despite receiving life-saving measures from medical staff and EMTs at the scene, the athlete died after arriving at a hospital. IRONMAN officials confirmed the death in a statement while requesting privacy for the individual’s family. This event is a 70-mile triathlon consisting of swimming, biking, and running, serving as a preliminary competition for a longer race held on September 13.
