Athletics designate Jose Suarez for assignment after 36 relief appearances

The Oakland Athletics designated left-handed reliever Jose Suarez for assignment on Wednesday. The eight-year veteran appeared in 36 games for the team this season, recording a 5.65 ERA and 37 strikeouts over 43 innings. Suarez joined Oakland as his third team of 2026, following stints with the Atlanta Braves and Seattle Mariners. Because he has reached five years of major league service, the 28-year-old cannot be optioned to Triple-A, meaning any team that claims him must add him to their active big league roster and assume the remainder of his $900,000 salary. The Athletics promoted right-handed pitcher Geoff Hartlieb from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill the vacant spot on the major league roster. Suarez previously spent six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, where he functioned primarily as a starting pitcher.
