Attorney criticizes Arizona State University investigation into hockey player collapse

An attorney representing the family of Arizona State University hockey player Matthew Mayich has criticized the university’s internal investigation following the athlete's collapse into a coma. Mayich required medical assistance on August 20 during a morning workout at the school's Joe Selleh Track when temperatures reached nearly 90 degrees. Lawyer Robert Carey alleged that the workout was excessively strenuous and that players fear retaliation from coaching staff, who remain in their positions. In contrast, the instructor who led the session, Tim Ziesel, described the drills as mid-level conditioning and stated he had departed before the collapse occurred. A spokesperson for the university stated that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the workout is ongoing. The family remains at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, where Mayich continues to receive treatment.
