Attorneys to retest blood evidence in Sean Higgins criminal trial

Attorneys representing Sean Higgins confirmed plans to independently retest blood evidence ahead of his trial for the deaths of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew Gaudreau. Higgins, 44, faces charges including reckless vehicular homicide and aggravated manslaughter following an August 2024 crash in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. During a September 11 video conference in Salem County Superior Court, defense counsel noted the testing process involves data and crash reconstruction reports provided by state police. Judge Michael Silvanio previously denied a request to dismiss charges based on claims that blood testing was handled improperly. The court scheduled a final pretrial conference for October 19. If no resolution is reached, jury selection is slated to begin December 1, with the trial tentatively set to start on January 5.
