Averett University defeated Southern Virginia University 41-34 on Saturday evening at Knight Stadium in Buena Vista, Virginia. Sophomore quarterback Brandon Saunders led the Cougars, completing 18 of 30 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns while adding 110 rushing yards. Saunders also recorded a 73-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter to secure the lead. This victory marked the first collegiate win for Averett head coach Matt Quinn. Southern Virginia attempted a late rally behind quarterback Devin Watson and receiver Jax Vanchiere, but Averett held on to earn its first non-conference away win since 2024.
