Baloo Gupte held prominent first-class record despite limited Test career success

Balkrishna Pandharinath Gupte, known as Baloo Gupte, concluded his international cricket career with three appearances for India after debuting in the 1960-61 series against Pakistan. Despite capturing 417 first-class wickets throughout his career, he secured only three wickets during his brief Test tenure. His domestic performance included a notable 9-for-55 outing for West Zone against South Zone in the 1962-63 Duleep Trophy final, a record for the best innings bowling in the tournament that stood for nearly 38 years. Baloo Gupte consistently operated in the shadow of his elder brother, Subhash Gupte, who claimed 149 wickets across 36 Tests. While Subhash earned recognition as a premier leg-spinner of his generation, Baloo remained a fixture of the domestic circuit, playing for Bombay, Bengal, and Railways.
