Baron Corbin defends title against Carmelo Hayes on SmackDown

SmackDown airs tonight with a live show emanating from TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. This is the second episode of SmackDown during the nine week build to Money in the Bank, which takes place on October 10. Baron Corbin is too tall for the WWE SmackDown roster Baron Corbin has had great success on SmackDown since he returned to WWE last month. He cheated to win the United States championship from Trick Williams at SummerSlam, and he did it again to beat Trick in the rematch last week on SmackDown. Trick may have all the charisma in the world, but that didn’t do much for him going up against Corbin’s most impressive skill in the ring, which is being very tall. The very tall new champ has an even bigger height advantage tonight when puts the belt on the line against Carmelo Hayes. Corbin took out Melo with End of Days last month during his WWE return, which ruined Melo’s chance to win back this belt. Carmelo now has a singles match against Baron to get revenge and take his title. Did WWE give mediocre Baron Corbin two consecutive wins over Trick Williams to build him up for Melo to chop down, or will Corbin prove to be way too tall for his latest challenger on the blue brand to handle? Damian Priest and R-Truth’s surprisingly long reign as WWE Tag Team Champions might come to an end in tonight’s 3-way title match against AAA World Tag Team Champions War Raiders and Talla & Tama Tonga. Does Priest really have backstage heat for saying that everyone is sick of seeing the same wrestlers in the top spots in WWE? Does Haku managing the Tongans give them the edge they need to capture championship gold, or will Shinsuke Nakamura start a war by bringing in a friend from Japan to kick their asses? Other stuff to keep an eye on – Randy Orton is back on SmackDown to be the worst version of himself and make sure Cody Rhodes never wins the WWE championship again. Will Rhodes and Orton both be involved in the Money in the Bank ladder match coming up in October, or will they wrestle each other in some other kind of violent gimmick match before then where Cody can kill the legend? – Does WWE plan to strip Chelsea Green of her championship due to her latest bad luck with injuries? If so, is Nia Jax the frontrunner to become the next interim WWE women’s champion? For whatever it’s worth, the latest rumors and reports indicate that WWE will keep the belt on Green even though she probably can’t wrestle for a while. – Kevin Owens ended his promo battle with CM Punk last week by calling the WWE champion a miserable piece of shit. KO wants to get his guaranteed title match against Punk on next week’s episode of SmackDown in Toronto. Will GM Nick Aldis give Kevin what he wants, or will the miserable piece of shit try to delay it? – Nikki Bella and Paige are on a collision course for a singles match now that Brie Bella is out with a broken shoulder blade. Will Paige get some mic time tonight to respond to The Bella Twins’ heel turn at SummerSlam? Does anybody really want to see this match in 2026? – Sami Zayn is super pissed off after GM Nick Aldis changed his number one contender match at SummerSlam. Is there a chance that Aldis still books Zayn vs. Finn Balor to see who the next top contender is after Owens gets his title match against Punk? Or does GUNTHER stand out as the guy who is most likely to fail at winning the WWE championship again? – Alexa Bliss brought Tatum Paxley with her to SmackDown last week, where they helped Charlotte Flair beat Jade Cargill after neutralizing The Baddies.
