Ben McKinney joins the Newport boys basketball program as a transfer

Three-star recruit Ben McKinney has transferred to the Newport High School boys basketball program. The 6-foot-11 center joins the team after spending the 2025-26 season at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas. While Newport has not issued a formal announcement, the player listed the high school on his personal social media account. McKinney, who is ranked 171st nationally in the Class of 2027 by On3, has reportedly reclassified to the Class of 2028. His addition complements a roster that already includes returning leading scorer Amontae Lowe, as well as Jayden Wilkins and Griffin Starks. Newport finished the previous season with a 21-10 record and remains a significant contender within the Ninth Region.
