Billy Donovan reflects on his departure as Chicago Bulls head coach

Billy Donovan recently addressed his decision to step down as the Chicago Bulls head coach in April 2026. He noted that the arrival of a new front office created an environment where the leadership team should have the autonomy to select its own coaching staff. Following his departure from Chicago, Donovan joined the San Antonio Spurs in July 2026 to serve as the lead assistant coach under Mitch Johnson. Prior to his new role in San Antonio, Donovan was a candidate for other vacancies, including the Orlando Magic coaching position. Meanwhile, the Bulls finalized the hiring of Tiago Splitter as their new head coach in June 2026. John Bryant, an assistant who previously served on Donovan's staff in Chicago, has also moved on to join the Charlotte Hornets. Donovan spent 11 seasons as a head coach in the NBA with Oklahoma City and Chicago.
