Blackhawks sign Bowen Byram to record six-year extension

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed defenseman Bowen Byram to a six-year contract extension averaging $12.5 million per year. This deal, which will make Byram the highest-paid defenseman in NHL history, is set to begin in the 2027-28 season. Byram was acquired from the Buffalo Sabres as part of a trade that sent the fourth-overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft to Buffalo. Throughout his career, Byram has played in a secondary role behind notable defensemen, but he is expected to take on a leading role with the Blackhawks. Other top defensemen, including Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes, are also in line for contract extensions soon.
