Blue Jays designate knuckleballer Matt Waldron for assignment

The Toronto Blue Jays designated pitcher Matt Waldron for assignment on August 19. Waldron, the only active knuckleballer in MLB, has struggled with a 10.38 ERA over four appearances this season. He was previously claimed off waivers from the San Diego Padres earlier in August after a challenging year, which included a stint in Triple-A and injuries. In response to Waldron's departure, the Blue Jays have called up left-handed pitcher Brendan Cellucci from Triple-A Buffalo, where he posted a 3.89 ERA in 39 games. Waldron's performance included a 4.91 ERA in 27 appearances during the 2024 season, but he could not maintain that success in 2025 and 2026.
