The lingering tension between former New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman and the organization resurfaced this week, but Yankees manager Aaron Boone made it clear Friday that he does not believe the club owes the veteran reliever an apology. One day after Chapman told ESPN Deportes that he feels the Yankees should apologize for how his tenure ended in 2022, Boone responded before New York’s 8-5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. “At the end of the day, he wasn’t at the workout,” Boone said. “I made the decision, based on a lot of things and thought, to leave him off because I thought that was the right thing for our club at the time.”

Chapman, an eight-time All-Star and two-time World Series winner, was ruled out of New York’s divisional series against Cleveland in Oct. 2022 after he skipped a mandatory workout. Earlier that season, Chapman was on the injured list from Aug. 24-Sept. 16 because of an infection in his leg caused by getting a tattoo.
