Borussia Dortmund submitted its Champions League roster to UEFA on Friday, leaving captain Emre Can off the list. The 32-year-old defender has been sidelined since March due to a cruciate ligament tear, though the club had previously expected him to return to play this year. Dortmund also excluded newcomer Giannis Konstantelias and young player Justin Lerma from the squad. Konstantelias sustained a cruciate ligament injury during the Bundesliga opener against SV Hamburg last weekend, and Lerma is also managing an injury. The club begins its Champions League campaign against Villarreal on Tuesday. If the team advances to the knockout stage, Dortmund will have the opportunity to register new players at the end of January.
