Borussia Dortmund vice-captain Nico Schlotterbeck returned to the pitch for individual work with the ball on Wednesday. The 26-year-old has been sidelined since June 20th, when he sustained a medial ligament injury to his left ankle during Germany's World Cup group stage match against Ivory Coast. Schlotterbeck initially played through the first half of that game but was substituted at halftime, leading to a lengthy recovery period that forced him to miss the entirety of the preseason and the opening of the Bundesliga campaign. While the return to ball work marks a milestone in his rehabilitation, Dortmund has not indicated a timeline for when the defender will rejoin full team training. The club continues to monitor his progress as he works toward a return to competitive action for Niko Kovač’s squad.
