Boston Red Sox activate Romy Gonzalez for 2026 debut against Yankees

Romy Gonzalez returns to the Boston Red Sox lineup for the first time this season, activated from the injured list ahead of the game against the New York Yankees on June 28. Gonzalez underwent shoulder surgery in March and missed the season's first 81 games. In his career year last season, he hit.305 with nine home runs. Following a brief rehab assignment with Double-A Portland, where he had two hits in six at-bats, he is expected to serve primarily at second base and as the designated hitter. To make room for Gonzalez, the Red Sox have transferred Roman Anthony to the 60-day injured list and optioned Mickey Gasper to Triple-A.
