Brent Venables praises John Mateer's toughness amid struggles

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables expressed strong support for quarterback John Mateer, highlighting his toughness and leadership qualities. Despite Mateer's inconsistent performance this season, including eight touchdowns and four interceptions in five games, Venables remains confident in his abilities. Mateer's turnovers have led to criticism, particularly during a loss against Michigan and a difficult game against Georgia. With a bye week ahead, there is potential for Mateer to improve as the Sooners prepare for a matchup against No. 1 Texas.
