BYU defensive back Cannon DeVries earned Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week honors following his performance in a 63-7 victory over Utah Tech on September 5, 2026. The sophomore returned two punts for 73 yards and recorded a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. This marks the first kickoff return for a score by a BYU player since 2024. DeVries, who previously gained attention for an inaccurate likeness in the video game College Football 27, has now secured a primary role in the return game. Head coach Kalani Sitake noted that the position became available following the departure of Parker Kingston in February. DeVries also contributed on defense as a nickel back, recording one tackle during the season opener.
