Carmella Vilardo promotes concussion education at Niagara Falls High School seminar

Student-athlete Carmella Vilardo spoke at a Concussion Outreach Prevention Education seminar at Niagara Falls High School following her recovery from a head injury sustained during a soccer match this past March. Vilardo experienced worsening symptoms, including dizziness, nausea, and brain fog, days after receiving an elbow to the head during a header attempt. Her recovery process involved a multi-month treatment plan, physical therapy, and academic accommodations. The seminar, which also featured athletic trainer Tony Surace and medical professionals, aimed to educate parents and students on the signs and management of brain injuries. According to the Centers for Disease Control, girls' soccer maintains the second-highest concussion rate among youth sports. Vilardo intends to continue playing soccer, utilizing a protective Q-collar to help reduce her risk of future injury.
