Chad Gable’s babyface redemption arc has been playing out on WWE programming ever since he unmasked as the original El Grande Americano in May. Would it culminate with Gable winning the Intercontinental title from fellow babyface Penta today (Aug. 2) at SummerSlam Sunday? Chad had the home state advantage on his side at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. WWE commentator Michael Cole noted that Gable has never won a singles title in WWE (I guess because winning the Speed championship as El Grande doesn’t count), and “Minnesota has been waiting for this moment.” Let’s see how successful Gable was at getting his hometown fans to do his overhead clap gimmick during his entrance. But Gable persevered with only one good arm. He did major damage of his own with a German suplex on the ring apron, followed by a moonsault to the outside. Penta soon returned in kind with a Mexican Destroyer on the ring apron for a near fall. Penta went for another Destroyer inside the ring, but Gable caught him in the ankle lock. Penta tried his best to escape, but once Chad clamped down on his grip, the champ had no choice but to tap out. Gable broke down in tears after winning his first singles title in WWE.
