What they're saying

If you checked into the wrestle web at all this weekend, you’ve seen praise for the main event of Saturday night’s AAA Lucha Libre Noche de los Grandes event. And while much of that praise has been for the victor of the Original El Grande Americano vs. El Grande Americano mask match (EGA, played by Ludwig Kaiser), and some has gone to the pro wrestling icon who’s in charge of AAA creative under WWE’s ownership (Undertaker)… a ton has gone to the man who adhered to lucha tradition and introduced himself to the appreciative Monterrey, Mexico crowd after losing the OGA mask on May 29. View this post on Instagram In his post-show remarks, Gable promised to return to Mexico. But with his story there done for now, he followed Corey Graves lead and hopped on a plane to Italy, presumably to catch-up with the main roster. Yesterday (May 31), he posted this non-embeddable Instagram from a flight: Onward to Italy. Cleaned up a tiny bit first. Which has prompted many on the wrestle web to hope/demand that WWE find something meaningful for El Grande Gable to do now that he returns to Raw sans mask. Most of the various arguments being made online follow this early one from Ibou, aka @BackupHangman, whose track record as a rumormonger is spotty, but who nailed this take: Chad Gable should be rewarded with a main event push after finding a way to turn “white guy that plays a Luchador” into a gimmick that got over and main evented big shows. He re signed 2 years ago, never got to win the IC title, didn’t get to beat Gunther, American Made was used to get the Wyatt Sicks over, who are no longer here. Much credit should go to Kaiser, and to Taker’s team (which includes former TNA producer Jeremy Borash). Ibou acknowledged that in the lengthy conversations his initial tweet started, but everything else he said stands. The big thing (no pun intended, I swear) holding Gable back in WWE is his height — it was his whole gimmick under Vince McMahon for a while. But lately I wonder if he hasn’t fallen into the same trap that guys like R-Truth, or either of Dusty Rhodes’ sons, have fallen into at various points in their WWE careers: he’s so good at getting bad ideas over, they don’t give him good ones. I don’t know what the exact reason is that Gable’s never held a singles belt in WWE, or given more than short programs with main eventers as a talented underdog who can’t pull off the upset. But he deserves more, and the years-long program he just wrapped up proves it once again. Come on WWE. Give El Grande Gable something meaningful to do on Raw. Graciaaaas Thank Yoooou!
