Tom Whitestone, a longtime administrator for Charlotte Athletics, died on Tuesday following a battle with cancer. The university confirmed his passing on Wednesday. Whitestone joined the 49ers in 1987 and served 37 years as a sports information director and associate athletic director for media relations before his retirement in 2024. During his tenure, he founded the Charlotte Athletics Hall of Fame and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2020. Earlier this month, the university announced that Whitestone was selected for induction into the Hall of Fame during the 2026-27 basketball season. He is survived by his wife, Kim, and two children, Sam and Allie.
