Chicago Fire sign Norwegian defender Andreas Hanche-Olsen from Mainz 05

Chicago Fire FC announced the acquisition of defender Andreas Hanche-Olsen from German Bundesliga side Mainz 05 on Tuesday. The 29-year-old Norwegian international signed a contract that keeps him with the club through the 2030-31 Major League Soccer season. Hanche-Olsen brings a decade of professional experience to Chicago, having previously played for Stabæk, Gent, and Mainz. Throughout his career, he has recorded 12 goals and 10 assists across 311 appearances, while earning 22 international caps for Norway since 2021. Chicago director of football and head coach Gregg Berhalter cited the defender's leadership and extensive European competition background as key factors in the signing. The club currently holds third place in the Eastern Conference with 37 points and is actively competing for a second consecutive Audi MLS Cup Playoffs appearance.
