Classic City Dawgs adaptive team fosters community for athletes with disabilities

The Classic City Dawgs adaptive sports program in Athens is helping students with disabilities build confidence and find community. Founded in 2024, the program has expanded from a handful of athletes to a multi-coach team participating in various sports, including wheelchair basketball and football. This season, the Dawgs reached the JV playoffs in football after showing significant improvement, having gone undefeated in wheelchair basketball before a loss in the state championship in March. Despite challenges in awareness and initial hesitance from families, coaches emphasize the importance of adaptive sports for personal identity and community connection.
