Colorado Avalanche name Will Slohm as designated emergency backup goalie

The Colorado Avalanche have appointed assistant strength and conditioning coach Will Slohm as their designated emergency backup goalie for the 2026-27 NHL season. This selection follows the league's updated rules requiring teams to employ and travel with a dedicated emergency backup for all home and away games. The new policy replaces the previous practice of using local volunteers or arena staff. Slohm, 27, previously played goaltender at the ACHA Division II and NCAA Division III levels, meeting the NHL criteria of having fewer than 80 professional appearances and no professional play in the last three years. As the designated EBUG, Slohm is eligible to participate in morning skates and daily practices, providing the team flexibility to manage the workloads of their primary rostered goaltenders. The organization retains the ability to adjust this designation provided they notify the league at least 24 hours before a game.
