Cowboys place offensive lineman Tyler Smith on injured reserve

Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Tyler Smith will miss 4-6 weeks after undergoing surgery on a torn ligament in his left thumb. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer stated the medical staff initially attempted to have the three-time Pro Bowler play through the injury before electing for surgery. As a starter on the interior, Smith is a significant piece of the offensive line that finished 9th in rushing last season. TJ Bass is expected to take over at left guard in his absence. While the team remains healthy at the skill positions, the loss of their most experienced lineman creates a void in pass protection and run blocking as the season begins.
