Cubs activate Daniel Palencia from IL, add Gabriel Arias to roster

The Cubs activated right-hander Daniel Palencia from the injured list on August 21, following a rehab stint. Palencia returns after more than two months away due to injuries, including an oblique strain and a flexor issue. He has a 2.70 ERA in 19 games this year but will not immediately resume closing duties. Infielder Gabriel Arias has been added to the 26-man roster after being claimed off waivers from the Mets, while Owen Miller was designated for assignment. Right-hander Javier Assad was optioned to Triple-A Iowa to make room for Palencia.
