Cubs promote B.J. Murray and Tyler Ferguson as rosters expand

The Chicago Cubs added utility player B.J. Murray and right-handed reliever Tyler Ferguson to their active roster on September 1. MLB teams were permitted to expand their active rosters from 26 to 28 players effective today. Murray, a 15th-round draft pick in 2021, joins the major league club after posting a.294 batting average with 16 home runs at Triple-A Iowa this season. He provides the team with a right-handed backup at first base behind Michael Busch. Ferguson, acquired from the Athletics in May, returns to the Cubs' bullpen after appearing in 17 games for the major league team earlier this year. To accommodate these moves, the team utilized their final open spot on the 40-man roster, which had been vacant since the designated for assignment move involving Hoby Milner last week.
