Daiya Kira captured the WBA light flyweight world championship on September 2 at the Buntai in Yokohama, Japan. He secured the title by defeating Carlos Cañizales via a seventh-round technical knockout. The stoppage occurred at 0:38 after referee Raul Caiz Jr. intervened when Cañizales failed to recover from a second knockdown in the round. Kira controlled the bout throughout, scoring an earlier knockdown with an overhand left in the third round. The championship had been vacant since the WBA stripped former holder René Santiago earlier this year due to injury. This result marks a significant achievement for Kira, who claimed his first world title in only his fifth professional fight.
