Dale Earnhardt Jr. reflects on Sammy Smith’s tenure at JR Motorsports

JR Motorsports owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. recently discussed the development of driver Sammy Smith following the announcement of Smith's departure from the team. Smith joined the organization in 2024 with high expectations, though Earnhardt noted that the driver's performance often fell short of competitive goals. A specific point of tension occurred last year at Martinsville, where an aggressive maneuver by Smith resulted in a multi-car incident involving teammate Justin Allgaier. Despite that low point, Earnhardt noted visible growth in Smith’s decision-making and maturity during his three-season stint. Smith, who remains winless this season but has secured a playoff spot, plans to leave the team at the conclusion of the year. Carson Kvapil is slated to take over the No. 8 Chevrolet in 2027.
