Dallas Cowboys guard Tyler Smith misses season opener with thumb injury

Dallas Cowboys left guard Tyler Smith will miss the team's season-opening game against the New York Giants on Sunday. Coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed that Smith requires surgery on his left thumb and will be placed on injured reserve. The injury may sideline the three-time Pro Bowl selection for up to six weeks. In his absence, the Cowboys are expected to start TJ Bass at left guard for the Sunday night matchup. Bass has made 10 starts for Dallas over the past three seasons. Dallas also lists Ajani Cornelius on the roster as they prepare to face the Giants.
