Dallas Cowboys guard Tyler Smith will miss time following thumb surgery

Dallas Cowboys starting left guard Tyler Smith is expected to miss four to six weeks following thumb surgery. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed the injury on Monday, noting that Smith will be placed on the injured reserve list with a designation to return. The move removes one of the league's top-rated interior offensive linemen from the active roster during the early portion of the 2026 season. TJ Bass is set to fill the starting role at left guard while Smith recovers. The team opens its schedule against the New York Giants on Sunday, followed by games against the Washington Commanders, Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Green Bay Packers. Smith, who recently signed a four-year contract extension, was ranked as the top interior offensive lineman in the league prior to the season.
