Dallas Cowboys guard Tyler Smith will miss time following thumb surgery

Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer announced Monday that starting left guard Tyler Smith requires surgery on his thumb. The procedure, scheduled for Tuesday morning, will force the Pro Bowl lineman to the injured reserve list for a recovery period of four to six weeks. Veteran backup T.J. Bass will step into the starting lineup while Smith is sidelined. Bass, who has been with the organization since 2023, started five games last season and appeared in ten throughout his career. While team leadership acknowledges Smith’s significant role, they noted that Bass possesses sufficient experience in the offensive scheme to manage the vacancy. Bass recorded zero sacks and allowed four pressures across his playing time last year. The Cowboys begin their season facing this shift in the interior offensive line depth.
