Dallas Cowboys sign tight end James Mitchell to practice squad

The Dallas Cowboys signed tight end James Mitchell to their practice squad on Thursday. The move follows his release by the Carolina Panthers after the conclusion of the preseason. Mitchell, a 27-year-old product of Virginia Tech, spent three seasons with the Detroit Lions before joining the Panthers for the 2025 season. During his time in Carolina, he appeared in five games and recorded three receptions for 28 yards. The Panthers opted for other depth options at tight end, including Tommy Tremble, Ja’Tavion Sanders, Mitchell Evans, Darren Waller, and Feleipe Franks. Dallas seeks to bolster its practice squad depth behind established tight ends Jake Ferguson, Luke Schoonmaker, and Brevyn Spann-Ford. The Cowboys are scheduled to open the regular season on the road against the New York Giants on September 13.
