Dane Pizzaro has been named the starting kicker for Rutgers football, ending a competition that spanned training camp. Pizzaro replaces Jai Patel, who held the starting role for the previous three seasons. Patel struggled during the 2025 campaign, missing five of his first eight field-goal attempts in Big Ten play despite previously setting a school record for consecutive field goals. Pizzaro, entering his third year with the program, previously served as the team's long-range kicking option. Head coach Schiano cited Pizzaro’s leg strength as a primary factor in the decision. Rutgers opens the 2026 season Thursday, Sept. 3, against UMass at SHI Stadium.
- •Dane Pizzaro replaces three-year starter Jai Patel.
- •The decision follows a training camp position battle.
- •Pizzaro handled long-range field goal duties last season.
- •Rutgers plays UMass at home on Sept. 3.
