Danny McBride to appear as recurring character in MLW programming

Ortega/Getty Images | Getty Images Danny McBride, a critically-lauded actor and writer, is reportedly furthering his ties to Major League Wrestling (MLW) by becoming a recurring character for the indie promotion. While McBride may have been introduced to the public consciousness for his roles in hit comedies like Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder, he achieved greater renown for creating or co-creating (as well as starring in) the shows Eastbound & Down, Vice Principals, and The Righteous Gemstones. McBride is also a pro wrestling fan, and he acknowledged as much by giving John Goodman’s character on The Righteous Gemstones a backstory that involved a stint in the squared circle. That’s not to mention Will Ferrell’s character Ashley Schaeffer on Eastbound & Down, who was more than a little inspired by Ric Flair. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, McBride recently went the extra step of becoming a character for MLW. The outlet reported footage of the actor was shot at Mexico City’s Arena Coliseo, which will soon be shown on MLW programming. The material reportedly features McBride and frequent collaborator Steve Little promoting a luchador known as Don Gato. Not coincidentally, the masked wrestler shares the same name as McBride’s tequila brand, and the luchador is said to be a man with a fondness for the agave-distilled spirit. McBride is not a complete stranger to the world of MLW, though. He first worked with the promotion for the MLW x Don Gato: Lucha de los Muertos event he sponsored in his home base of Charleston, South Carolina, in November 2025. While McBride took in the 2025 MLW event while sipping tequila in the audience, he will soon get more airtime with the promotion, according to the Wrestling Observer’s report. Of course, McBride isn’t MLW’s only connection to Hollywood. Paul Walter Hauser, an award-winning actor known for roles in The Fantastic Four: First Steps and The Naked Gun reboot, wrestles for the promotion as well as serves as serves as an MLW executive producer.
