Portnoy characterized the decision to honor 31 seniors before any games had been played as a bizarre move that warrants conference discipline. The ceremony was reportedly supported by head coach Ryan Day to reduce potential distractions ahead of the program's rivalry game against Michigan on November 28. Despite the criticism surrounding the scheduling choice, Ohio State proceeded with the event and defeated Ball State 56-3. Quarterback Julian Sayin led the offense by throwing for 320 yards in the victory. The Buckeyes, who entered the 2026 season ranked No. 1, recorded 671 total yards of offense while limiting their opponent to 165 yards.
